The Moustache Madness

The moustache craze began about two years ago when the neighborhoods of Chicago became street fair for skinny men sporting thin, hairy lines above their upper lips. When it first began you would hear "what is the deal with the moustaches everywhere?" But then when the moustache craze exploded in the last year, it was no longer suspicion, but a fully confirmed invasion of culture.

Invasion is a harsh word, but with the also ever popular Zombie craze, it does not seem much different. Choosing to take part in these cultural phenomenons will either define your clout in "hip" society or put you in the "indifferent, unable to shift" group that young kids usually tout the older generation as.

And as for women, where do they fit in to the moustache madness?

It could be said that women do fit in, by dating the moustache man. Culturally hip by way of relationship. But this idea of women only fitting in to moustache culture by association, does not jive well with the ever independent woman. Which has left her to sport the moustache at every chance and show that this is not a discriminatory shift. Women have also found ways to join in this trend-in public races, during comedy sketches, photo shopped into photos of the girls out at the club. The moustache is no longer a gendered trend. It is a trend that has become part of our being.

So what does it all mean? That is left to be elusive it seems. It could mean absolutely nothing. But like every trend that catches on, nothing is by accident. The moustache started right along with the bacon push. Remember when that started happening? Bacon mentions in every comedy show, every commercial, every talk show? Do we really believe that people started digging bacon again? No. Just like the beef industry, someone somewhere said, we need to sell more bacon. And so it worked. But moustaches are not a part of our economy. Or are they?

Moustaches were popular in the 20's and 30's-men rarely sported facial hair except the moustache. During that time we were in the Great Depression. Does the moustache bring us a sort of mystery or questionable understanding of who we are as Americans? Given the recent state of economy, are we hiding behind our modern day moustache craze? Do Americans repeat a trend when history is repeated?

This all may be like going down a Charlie and Chocolate Factory Tunnel for some people. It seems that things can get pretty serious when it comes to moustaches.
