Visiting Chicago? Free Things to Do

With the economy equaling the sound of a fart: thppppththhhh, I thought I'd provide a handy list of activities that you can do for FREE when you visit Chicago. Skip Michigan Ave. tiring shopping and a trendy dinner at Bin 36! If you are planning a getaway come to Chicago and follow up on the things I provide on my list. I'm not kidding. You can have fun without blowing $500 in two days. I break each item down as a comparison to something more expensive.

1. HOTEL. Alternative: Craigslist apartments.---

Craigslist offers a huge section of apt. rentals. But here's the things. With the economy being the way it is why not ask someone who is looking for a subletter to rent out their studio for the weekend? People do it all the time! Give it a try. I bet you could find an awesome deal. While they look for permanant renters why wouldn't they want to make an extra buck? Check it out here.

2. THEATRE TIX. Alternative: FREE theatre tix.---

So as a theatre insider I know the tricks of getting fabulous theatre tix for free. Find theatres at Chicagoplays.com. Then call and ask if any of their shows are in previews and mention you heard they may have a comp list. Just try it, wink wink.

3. GIRLS GETAWAY MAKEOVER. Alternative: FREE new haircut and color!!

This is NO LIE. Go to salonapprentice.com. Apprentices at high end salons are always looking for hair models to try the latest styles on. And don't worry, their mentors watch their every move. Get a couple of friends together and go get made over for FREE! See my picture? Result of a free cut :)!

4. BAR HOPPING. Alternative: FREE drinks.

Myopenbar.com provides daily open bar possibilities. Sometimes it's low cost but their goal is to keep you posted about free drinks at Chicago bars, events, and parties.

5. GO TO A A-LIST EVENT. Alternative: Be in an A List Event and GET PAID!!

Call Extraordinary Casting at (312) 656-4211 and get the address to register yourself to be an extra in films and TV shows such as ER, Batman, and The Breakup. All you have to do is send in your picture and register. Then when you are going to be in town call and let them know when you would be available. You may be asked to be an extra in a movie and they'll pay you!

6. VISIT THE TOP OF THE HANCOCK TOWER. Alternative: Do it for FREE!

If you are a woman, you finally have an advantage in society. If you go to the lounge in the Hancock Tower you could see out to the city and have a $10 drink. OR visit the ladies room before you enter the lounge and guess what? They have a lovely view in there!!

7. LIVE CONCERT. Alternative: FREE live music events.

Visit avantchicago.com for updates on the local music scene. He always lets you in on when you can catch a free show.

I think these are my favorites. Hope this is helpful and frugal :)
